"Effective leadership is not about making
speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes."
Peter Drucker
Between my many roles
from management in various jobs to serving in the U.S. Air Force to running my
own company today, I think I have a pretty good grasp on what leadership is.
But just like technology changes from moment to moment and becomes obsolete
quickly, leadership styles can also take that same path. We have to be
open-minded to the many changes the home-based and direct selling industries make
at any given time and learn to adapt to them whenever necessary. Every time I hear someone talk about being a
leader, I think what their interpretation is about it.
In my opinion, leadership is more about having a “positive
attitude” than a particular skill. Some say that leaders are born, not bred. That
may be true, but many individuals are placed into positions that requires it
and never develop the right attitude. Here’s a hint: it take so much more than
to have people just “follow” you. It’s more than “the blind leading the blind”.
If you don’t prepare by submitting to daily personal development, committing to
up-to-date corporate training systems, or even a good old-fashioned attitude
adjustment, you may never gain the respect of your organization because they
don’t feel you are worthy of your position.
Take a moment every day and say some positive
affirmations about what you want, where you want to be in life, and how you
want to get there. Ask yourself, “Would I want to be led by me?” If the answer
is “no”, then you definitely have some work to do. Set the example for others
to follow and become the great leader for your team. Being an effective leader
is about having fun with your organization while accomplishing the goals set
for the team. Remember the saying: “TEAM stands for “Together Everyone
Achieves More”!
